Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar)

Native: Western North America
Location: Grown in Europe for timber, shelter, in gardens and often as hedging.
Is an important timber tree. Height to 40m or more.
Leaves are dark and glossy above and paler beneath with some light whitish marks. They emit a strong fruity smell even without being crushed.
Pollen and Seed Cones
Cones open in March, males are dark red, pale yellow when shedding pollen, females yellowish green, both about 2mm long.
Mature cones are about 12mm long with 10-12 scales, ripening from yellowing green to brown and opening slightly to release winged seeds.
