A deciduous small tree, sometimes shrubby. Although the name Papaw has long been used for this tree it is not the one which bears the fruit named Pawpaw (Carica papaya).

Fruit, rarely produced in Britain, is cylindrical 7.5-15cm long unevenly shaped, ripening in September and October to dark brown, and containing a sweet orange edible flesh.
