Location: Cultivated in western N. America in gardens and as hedging and shelterbelts. Also planted in Europe, S. America and Australia.

Height to 18m in the wild, but may be twice the size in cultivation.

Cones open in March, the males turning yellow and shedding pollen. Females develop into mature cones.
