Sciadopitys verticillata (Umbrella Pine)
Location: Cultivated in large gardens.
Coniferous tree. Height to about 21m or less in cultivation but up to 36m in native habitat.
Leaves are distinctively arranged in whorls along the branches. They are narrow and shining green with a deep groove both above and below.
Pollen and Seed Cones
Cones open in April and May, males yellow about 12mm long in clusters at shoot tips, females dark.
Mature cones ripen over two years from green to brown, about 5cm to 7cm long. The scales open to release seeds and are loosely attached. The cone usually breaks up easily when handled.
