Leaves may be wavy edged and are dull green above and shiny underneath with downy tufts in the vein axils They colour yellow and scarlet in the autumn.

Flowers look similar to Chinese Stewartia (Stewartia sinensis) about 5cm across with clusters of bright yellow anthers and broad wavy-edged petals. Flower buds are set between two red-tipped bracts and open in late July and August.
